Sump Pump Troubleshooting Part 2

sump pumps RI

Having a sump pump is the best way to keep your basement dry, but only as long as it’s working. At Global Basement Waterproofing, we know our job isn’t over after we install sump pumps in RI. Ensuring that they continue to function properly is also part of our job. In our last post, we covered a few things you can do to troubleshoot a malfunctioning sump pump. If nothing on that list did the trick, we have some more ideas for you to try.

Here’s the second half of our list of suggestions for troubleshooting sump pumps in RI.

Inspect the Check Valve

The check valve prevents water from returning to the sump pit. Make sure it’s correctly installed and free from damage or blockages. Water should only flow one way through the check valve. If it’s flowing back into the sump pit, the check valve is malfunctioning or installed incorrectly.

Listen for Unusual Sounds

Odd noises or excessive vibration may indicate issues with the impeller or motor. Your sump pump isn’t supposed to be silent, but it shouldn’t make a lot of noise while it’s running. If you notice a lot of noise, you may need to repair or replace the impeller or motor.

Test the Backup System

In the event of a power outage or loss of power to the pump, you should have a backup in place. Check that the backup battery still has a charge and is kicking in of the pump loses its primary power source.

Check the Water Table

A consistently high water table can strain your sump pump. If there has been a lot of rain or other precipitation in your area, it may be more than your sump pump can handle. Consider installing a higher-capacity pump or addressing the underlying water issue.

Schedule Regular Maintenance

The best way to solve a problem with your sump pump is to prevent it. Preventive maintenance, including cleaning the pit, lubricating the pump, and checking all components, is crucial. Aim for an annual maintenance routine to keep your sump pump in optimal condition.
